The FAA announced that it will discontinue the hazardous inflight weather advisory service (HIWAS) in the lower 48 states as of January 8, 2020. The decision is reportedly due to decreased usage of the service as pilots are now using datalink weather services such as SiriusXM or FIS-B through their ADS-B In product.

ATC will still advise pilots in their area of hazardous weather within 150 miles of their sector and pilots will still be able to contact Flight Services directly for additional information on hazardous weather. This change only discontinues the continuous broadcast of weather advisories over the VOR network. Read the notice from the FAA here.
