The  FAA issued a new recommendation to all general aviation pilots on December 26; to install an AOA indicator or warning system in their aircraft and get the necessary training on how to use it.

An AOA system shows the pilot the angle at which the airplane’s wings are meeting the oncoming airflow – which indicates the lift. The pilot is notified if he or she is approaching a critical angle of attack and potentially-hazardous low speed conditions, which could result in an aerodynamic stall.

This special airworthiness information bulletin, “Stall Warning System: Angle of Attack Alerting System,” was issued on December 26, 2024. This is currently a recommendation, not a new regulation. Through this measure, the FAA hopes to prevent future accidents similar to the loss of the Colgan Air Bombardier and the souls onboard.*Information taken from The FAA Recommends AOA Indicators For All Aircraft, a Simple Flying article by Justin Fowler.
